BTS: SF/X Makeup for “The Curse of the Mummy’s Tomb!” – Making the Mummy, Part I

Working in 3D is pretty cool, and it’s allowing us to construct some sets that, due to budget constraints, we would otherwise be unable to utilize. There is a tendency, however, to do things in CG that could be done better in front of the camera, simply because it can be done. It’s certainly a flexible solution, but it often lacks the authenticity of traditional creature creation. So, while we could have made a CG mummy (which, we in fact did, for testing purposes) we felt it would be better to utilize a real mummy.

Of course, our decision to go this route was made possible by having legendary SF/X makeup artist, Norman Bryn, on the team!

A talented makeup artist who has made some of the most familiar faces on both the large and small screen look their most glamorous, Norman is also a talented painter and sculptor, skills he has used for almost 30 years of creature creation.

Today was the first of three sittings to begin the making of our mummy. Norman (assisted by our talented hair stylist, Chris Cantuccini) is casting actor Michael J. Citak’s head so that he can create all of the silicone appliances that will eventually become the rotting flesh of our mummy’s face. Later this week, Norman will do Michael’s body so that the full “mummy suit” can be constructed.

I have been making photographs for a long time, and still I am continually amazed by Norman’s skill and artistry. Just as with the rest of my team, I am exceptionally lucky to have the opportunity to work with him. Stay tuned for more spooky goodness!
